Europe, the Middle East and Africa sees one-third of global printing assignments occurring every year. The EMEA region witnesses the sales of over 314 million inkjet cartridges. The total sales figure worldwide stands at 942 million. That’s equivalent to almost thirty cartridges per second. To put in perspective, that’s the same volume as the blood in 2,260,000 people.
Toners Cartridges Harm the Planet
So, where do all these toner cartridges go after they have fulfilled their purpose? To the landfills of course! 80% of cartridges (more than 350 million cartridges every year) are discarded rather than reused. Each cartridge turns into 3.5 pounds of solid garbage. A regular toner requires 450-1000 years to fully decompose. Because of the high carbon footprint of toners, the environment is being affected negatively.
A toner cartridge contains several components including the ink. The ink is prone to leaking and seeps into the underground water reserves, thereby polluting the earth. Furthermore, 5 pints of petroleum are required to manufacture one toner cartridge. 200 million liters of petroleum are used in the manufacturing of toners in North America alone! Hence, toner cartridges are diminishing the already depleted petroleum reserves of the world.
How Recycled Toner Cartridges Can Turn the Table
Recently, printer supplies are becoming a popular alternative due to their low cost and positive impact on the environment. A recycled cartridge is a regular toner cartridge that has been refilled, repaired, refurbished to enable reuse. In North America, more than 40,000 tons of plastic and metal is spared from landfills yearly as a result of cartridge reusing. For each 100,000 utilized cartridges reused, we can spare 9599 kilograms of aluminum, 40 tons of plastic, and 1,000,000 liters of oil. Recycled toner cartridges are at the forefront of sustainable ecological development.
There are several ways of using recycled cartridges. They can be remanufactured, reused and refurbished. Reuse is the most effective type of recycling which can offer the used cartridges multiple lives, which do not involve polluting the earth.
Benefits of Recycled Toner Cartridges
A recycling used toner conveys several benefits. It lessens air and water contamination and decreases emissions from land filling, incineration or the manufacturing of new cartridges. A toner can be refilled up to 15 times and remanufactured 3-4 times. It preserves key natural like timber, water, oil/petroleum and minerals since it uses up lesser amount of raw materials than original toner cartridges. Almost 97% of the materials of a printer toner can be recycled if done properly. Moreover, since less number of new cartridges needs to be manufactured, the energy and petroleum cost and usage also goes down. This is beneficial for the manufacturers too. Thankfully, no oil is consumed during recycling of a toner.
Greenhouse gas emission from decomposing toner cartridges can be reduced because of recycled toners, thereby improving the global warming scenario.
Thanks to rising awareness among manufacturers and consumers alike, the use of recycled cartridge is increasing more and more. We hope that this trend will continue and our efforts to leave a better, cleaner world for our future generations will be fulfilled.
